The Colorado Supreme Court:

attorney complaints     dishonest attorney reimbursement fund

The Colorado Supreme Court is important in many ways and for different reasons.  For our purpose, we are focusing on the fact that this court regulates lawyers who practice in the State of Colorado.

In this function, the Supreme Court provides several important fuctions to the general public.

Attorney Complaints:

The Colorado Supreme Court's Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel is authorized to investigate allegations of misconduct by:
  • Colorado Licensed Attorneys,
  • Colorado Magistrates,
  • Colorado Licensed Attorneys Serving as Municipal Court Judges,
  • Allegations of the Unauthorized Practice of Law,
  • Matters Related to an Applicant for Admission to the Colorado Bar, and
  • Matters Related to the Colorado Attorneys' Fund For Client Protection.
You can search online to find a liscenced attorney's status and disciplinary history for any liscenced Colorado Lawyer.

To file a complaint about one of the above, you need to contact the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel at (303) 893-8121, or toll free 1-877-888-1370.

They ask that you do not file a complaint in writing before contacting the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel by telephone. In some cases, your written information is not needed to evaluate your complaint.

They also have the Colorado Rules of Procedure regarding Attorney Discipline, and the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct.

Attorneys' Fund for Client Protection:
The Colorado Supreme Court also controls a fund that is "established by the Colorado Supreme Court to reimburse clients who suffer loss of money or other property from the dishonest conduct of their attorney."

People paid from this fund are clients who are unable to be repaid from the attorney involved, insurance or other sources.  Anyone attempting to receive money from this fund is expected to have made reasobnable efforts to collect from the sources listed above prior to application for relief from this fund.

All attempts to claim money from this fund "must originate out of or occur contemporaneously with an attorney discipline matter."

You can file for reimbursement by calling  the Office of Attorney Regulation at (303) 893-8121 or toll-free 1-(877) 888-1370.

There is no filing fee.
